Effective Local Governments
In the recent election, when the media asked the people, they were complaining about the road conditions. Even in city like Bangalore, people have no idea about the various layers of Indian government system.
They may understand the layers of Internet; but not the government system.
They expect the Prime Minister to fix their local problems. Since their local problems are not addressed, people get frustrated with governments.
Almost on daily basis, people are directly connected to the local government.
Federal government responsibility is to maintain relationship with neighbors; defense; high level policy.
So, on daily basis, people do not interact with Federal governments.
State government responsibility is to maintain relationship with neighboring states; and again very high level. On daily basis, people do not interact with State governments too.
But people do interact almost on daily basis with their local governments. Water supply, sanitation, fire safety, health, power, street lights, road, local transportation.
Even, Jayalalitha has not done any action to empower the local governments.
That is the major difference between India and America.
The local government is so effective. So people live a healthy, peaceful and comfortable life.
So, in India, we need to do two things.
One is get rid of all the ceremonial posts and save money on them.
Second is, empower the local governments.
Who could bring about this transformation?
Certainly not any political parties.
Because it will go against their survival.
Only leaders could transform India; not politicians.
